Web Designer — Digital History Website
Location: New England preferred (remote-friendly; occasional in-person collaboration a plus) Type: Contract, billed monthly at an hourly rate of $90/hr. Duration: September 2026 – September 2028 (two-year engagement) Budget: approximately 800 hours over the two-year period Reports to: management team; will work directly with the lead historian on content and interpretation, and with lead technical web developer.
About the Project
This is a project of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA), Deerfield, MA.
Lucy Terry Prince (c. 1726–1821): African American Experiences in Early Rural New England seeks to increase understanding of slavery and the African American experience in this region during the colonial era. Its focus is Lucy Terry Prince, the first documented African American poet. This immersive narrative is supported and contextualized with wider historical material for visitors to explore.
The project has completed its prototype phase: core visual language, tone, and technical approach for the scrollytelling experience are established. The designer who developed the prototype has since retired. You can view the live prototype at lucyterryprince.deerfield-ma.org. We're now looking for a designer to help take the site from prototype to a complete, polished, and published experience.
This project is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This position is subject to continued federal funding.
