Position Summary:
Want to help families access SNAP benefits to put food on the table and make sure they are receiving the benefits for which they are eligible? Interested in working closely with other programs and community partner agencies to help clients in need? Want to work in an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment? The SNAP/Benefits Advocate works with a diverse low-income population, providing SNAP application assistance, problem solving, advocacy, service coordination and resource referrals. Your role will be to assist clients in accessing the safety net resources for which they are eligible.
This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 9-5, with flexibility for a healthy work-home balance.You will be working remotely for the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once things return to normal, most work will be out of our Waltham office with opportunities for phone and face-to-face client contact. There will be biweekly visits to our partner in Framingham and monthly anti-hunger meetings in Boston.In addition to direct service work with clients, we work with other organizations to promote positive change in state and federal policies related to SNAP.
Your workday will include:
- Phone intakes with clients.
- Assessments for eligibility for public benefits.
- Directly helping with SNAP applications.
- Problem solving and advocacy with DTA to overturn SNAP denials, terminations or reductions.
- Consultations with colleagues and staff or team meetings.
- Facilitating referrals to community resources.
- Rich departmental and agency trainings with regular supervision.
What can you bring to this position?
- A Bachelor's degree, preferably with additional related work experience.
- High emotional intelligence to work effectively with diverse individuals from many backgrounds.
- Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility, creativity and determination to face challenging client situations with hope and compassion.
- Experience in SNAP, public benefits, or other law related field.
- A car or reliable transportation for client visits and meetings with partner agencies.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office computer programs (Excel, Word, Outlook) and comfortable learning and using technology for record-keeping and communication.
