Request for Proposal: Logo & Branding

Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation

Job Description

The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation is seeking a design firm to create an up-to-date logo design; templates for online and printed materials; and a branding and style guide related to the logo’s use.

The logo should reflect MLAC’s role as the largest source for civil legal aid funding in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It should resonate with our audiences, which include: members of the state legislature and executive branch, which provide an annual appropriation to fund legal aid; private foundations that provide legal aid funding; regional legal aid organizations; private lawyers and law firms that support funding for civil legal aid; community social service agencies focused on low-income people; and members of the general public who receive civil legal aid.

About MLAC

Mission: MLAC’s mission is to provide leadership and support to improve civil legal services to low-income people in Massachusetts through collaboration with the legal services community, the public, the bar, and the legislature.

Background: MLAC was established by the Commonwealth in 1983 to ensure that low-income people with critical, non-criminal legal problems would have access to legal information, advice, and representation.

MLAC receives funding from a variety of sources: including the Massachusetts state budget; the Interest on Lawyers Trust Account (IOLTA) funds; grants from government and private organizations; and other donations. MLAC disperses that funding to regional and statewide civil legal aid organizations that assist people with a variety of civil legal problems related to housing, health care, public benefits, immigration, domestic violence, and other serious civil legal issues. For more detail, please refer to MLAC’s Fiscal Year 20 Annual Report. Additional information is on the MLAC website

MLAC values diversity, equity, and inclusion. It seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to justice.

Project Overview

MLAC produces a wide variety of communications, in print, online, and in social media. MLAC also engages in frequent communications with legislators and funders on MLAC letterhead.

It seeks a new, versatile logo that can be used across these platforms.

The scope of the design project includes:

·       New logo in multiple formats
·       Style guide, including colors and fonts for print and website
·       Templates for legislative fact sheets (as seen here on the Equal Justice Coalition website)

Phase One – initial presentation of logo concepts to MLAC’s logo design committee.

Phase Two -- refined presentation of two to three concepts

Phase Three – Final design selection and delivery of final logo files in horizontal and vertical formats; in color and black and white; completed style guidelines for ease of use for many years

MLAC is committed to diversity in its workforce and among its contractors and consultants. Women, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people of color, and people who speak English as a second language are encouraged to apply.

Proposals should be submitted electronically by June 22, 2021 to hiring@mlac.org. No phone calls, please.
