Job Overview:
Part-time hourly freelance position as news editor of Neighborhood View, a citizen journalism program operated through UMA, Urban Media Arts. The editor is responsible for editing news content produced by citizen and student journalists and helping to nurture and support their work in collaboration with the Program Coordinator. The Editor would also teach occasional short-term workshops to train new journalists or build existing skills.

Position Summary:
The Editor works closely with the Program Coordinator and citizen journalists to develop, edit and prepare stories for publication. This is an ideal "side gig" or opportunity for a working journalist, freelance writer, journalism educator, retired reporter or other experienced editor who is passionate about local journalism and enjoys mentoring writers.
Responsibilities:
- Attend weekly editorial meetings (Wednesdays, 5:30–6:30 p.m. via Zoom)
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator on story development and writer support
- Edit articles submitted by citizen journalists for clarity, organization, style, and journalistic quality
- Provide constructive feedback to writers at varying experience levels
- Help identify opportunities to strengthen reporting and storytelling
- Contribute ideas about the growth and future direction of the program
Qualifications:
- Professional experience in journalism, editing, reporting or a closely related field
- Strong editing and communication skills
- Commitment to ethical journalism and accuracy
- Interest in mentoring and working with community-based writers from a diversity of backgrounds
- Ability to provide thoughtful, encouraging feedback while maintaining editorial standards
- Familiarity with local journalism issues and challenges
- Prior knowledge of Malden or Greater Boston communities is a plus, but not required if willing to dive deeply into learning about our community
Compensation:
- $25–$30 per hour, commensurate with experience.
- This position is budgeted for up to 20 hours per month (averaging up to 5 hours/week)
Location:
- Remote
- Candidates in the Greater Boston area are preferred, but applicants from other locations will be considered
- In-person visits to our community are encouraged.
