ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and educational programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include group fitness, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue-generating ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 45 communities across 24 states.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of the Program Coordinator is to oversee The Phoenix's operations in Lowell, MA, with significant focus on recruiting and activating volunteer instructors, ensuring quality programming, and fostering community relations. Excellent social skills and the ability to connect with partner organizations, donors, participants, and the general public are essential. This unique position will involve working in partnership with the Middlesex Sherriff's Office (MSO), specifically, the Office of Community Counseling, where The Phoenix's gym is located. The ideal candidate will have leadership experience and ability to instruct in one or more athletic disciplines such as group fitness, rock climbing, yoga, hiking, cycling, running or boxing. The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and adaptable to ever changing situations. A strong connection to The Phoenix mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

With support from the Massachusetts Program Manager, as well as regional and national staff, work to build a robust sober active community in Lowell, Massachusetts and surrounding communities
Build a strong volunteer program, including recruiting, training, supporting and retaining a solid base of volunteers who will lead the majority of Phoenix events
Support The Phoenix's other sites in Massachusetts and virtual programs as needed
Build partnerships with organizations and groups to improve access to recovery support and treatment for those living in the Lowell area
Oversee/manage general daily administrative needs and tasks of the Lowell Chapter, including scheduling programs, events, and outreach activities, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are in functioning order
In partnership with the Middlesex Sherriff's Office, support justice involved participants receiving services available to assist them with their re-entry
Coach multiple classes each week including Group Fitness, boxing, etc. in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment
Ensure that all programs and program spaces are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), reflect The Phoenix's core values and community standards, and adhere to program and discipline-specific standards
With guidance from the Program Manager and the National Development Team, participate in fundraising efforts, including private donations, grants, peer-to-peer fundraising, corporate sponsorships, and capital campaigns
Assist with the online presence of the chapter, including social media and website updates
Complete other duties as assigned
Work evening and weekend hours as needed
 

QUALIFICATIONS

Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
Experience coaching, instructing, or leading in one or more of the above-named disciplines
Knowledge and ability to assist individuals reentering from the criminal justice system who have substance use disorder
Experience with budgets and program management preferred
Community relation skills and willingness to initiate introductions with potential partners
Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
Organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills
Certifications in relevant athletic disciplines (e.g., CF-L1, L-2, or L-3; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE Personal Trainer; AMGA-CWI, SPI, or Rock Guide; IMBA-L1; YT-200, etc.) preferred but not required
First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR) preferred
