It is the mission of Swan Point Cemetery to make its facilities available to meet the needs of past, present and future generations by perpetuating a living memorial honoring life (and the termination of life on earth) with reverence and dignity, by maintaining a sanctuary of peace and beauty for those who survive, by providing a permanent record commemorating the lives of those who have gone before, and by offering counsel and guidance to those who must one day inevitably follow.
Swan Point Cemetery is at an important moment and has key decisions to make regarding future planning and activities as it moves forward in the coming years.
The next President of Swan Point Cemetery will work with the Board of Directors and staff to further the implementation of the organizations long-range plan. This plan, along with the master plan, guide the President’s work related to continued advancement toward stated goals, including decisions regarding the remaining land available for development, the increase in crematory services, and the further engagement of the community through an advanced outreach and marketing strategy.
Swan Point Cemetery is seeking a leader with a proven track record of translating vision into workable actions and organizational priorities.
The successful candidate will be a resourceful, strategic, compassionate, and humble leader who is able to empower staff to advance excellence in delivering the mission of the organization. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, landscape design, and developing a strategic path for an organization is also required. The candidate should have experience reporting to a Board of Directors.
Experience working in a cemetery or aligned industry is highly preferred. The ideal President has experience with applicable law and regulations relating to cemeteries. This person demonstrates expertise in a variety of the Cemetery field's concepts, practices, and procedures. They rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
The successful candidate will foster a climate within the Cemetery that inasmuch possible eases the grief of proprietors and their families in what is the most difficult time. They will maintain a visible presence representing the Cemetery with proprietors and outside professionals, Funeral Directors, Cemetery Associations, and other stakeholders. Using knowledge of the Cemetery and industry trends, this person will be active in developing long-range planning efforts in partnership with the Board. This leader will also identify areas for improvement in the operations and maintenance of the cemetery, develop alternatives, make decisions and initiate remedial actions.
Candidates will have high integrity, strong diplomatic skills, and extraordinary emotional intelligence in interacting with diverse constituencies and significant partners. Exceptional financial management skills developed through management of an institution of similar size and stature is preferred. Candidates must be able to interpret and articulate financial statements, performance, and forecasting. Candidates should demonstrate experience with people management and running a P&L.
A collaborator willing to actively participate in the cultural and civic life of region and integrate the Cemetery’s activities with the town’s other historical sites, museums, and programs is a plus. Experience engaging with professional connections in the cemetery and funeral director community is also highly preferred.
Strong candidates will have experience cultivating, developing, and inspiring a cohesive, high-performing team who embody the organizational values of collaboration, trust, and respect for one another. A management approach that is accessible, collaborative, and empowering must be demonstrated by results-oriented accountability and balance.
The ideal candidate will be a thoughtful communicator who has experience serving as the key spokesperson and public face of an institution. Superior communication skills engaging with a range of audiences are expected.
A bachelor’s degree is required, and 15 years' experience in upper-level management positions is preferred.
The compensation range for this position annually is between $180,000 - $200,000. Swan Point Cemetery offers eleven paid holidays, paid time off, sick time, health care coverage, long term disability, health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), life insurance, employee discounts, and a 401(k)-retirement plan with up to 8% employer match.
