Job Description

Position: Part-Time Grant Writer (20 - 25 hours/week)

Program: Ellis Early Learning

Reports to: VP of Advancement, Community, and Equity

Ellis Early Learning (formerly known as Ellis Memorial) is a vibrant, Boston-based nonprofit with a rich history founded in 1885. Ellis Early Learning provides high-quality early education and care for infants, toddlers, and preschool children, and out-of-school time programs for youth in grades K through 8. Ellis is among the most socio-economically, racially, and culturally diverse organizations serving children in Boston. Through a partnership with Boston Public Schools, it operates two high-performing community-based K-1 classrooms. Ellis operates out of two historic buildings in the South End and will be expanding to a new site in JP in September 2021. Ellis currently serves over 200 children annually. Learn more about us at


  • Perform prospect research to evaluate prospects for grants
  • Develop and submit proposals to private or public funders for grant funding
  • Proposal development including all aspects of proposal writing
  • Facilitate the flow of progress, proposal preparations, and submission to foundations, non-profit entities, the government, or other funding agency
  • Maintain compliance with all grant reporting as required by donors
  • Maintenance of grant records in the database and paper files, including grant tracking and reporting
  • Work closely with VP of Advancement, Community, and Equity


  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Strong editing skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources
  • Experience with proposal writing
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree at the Bachelor's level and 3-5 years relevant experience necessary
