Countless individuals in recovery from substance use disorders struggle to find a safe, supportive place to call home. Without stable housing, many face relapse, homelessness, and a cycle of despair. At Vanderburgh Sober Living (VSL), we are changing this reality by building recovery housing communities. Founded in 2016, VSL operates 38 recovery residences across New England, offering safe, affordable, and sustainable homes for individuals on their recovery journey.
To sustain and expand our impact, VSL is seeking an experienced and results-driven Grant Writer to join our Development Department. This role is essential in securing funding from private, corporate, and government sources, ensuring that we can continue providing life-changing housing and support.
The ideal candidate is an early to mid-career professional seeking a mission-driven career opportunity with experience in grant writing and fundraising within human and social services, addiction or behavioral health care, or low-income housing. The Grant Writer’s responsibilities include
- Develop a deep understanding of the services we provide and the communities we serve
- Identify areas where grant funding will have the greatest impact
- Research grant opportunities in the Candid national grant database
- Prioritize and track grant applications using an internal cloud-based database, ensuring deadlines and requirements are met
- Write, submit, and manage compelling grant proposals that effectively communicate our impact and funding needs
- Leverage artificial intelligence tools to enhance grant writing and research
- Gather and provide supporting documentation for funders by working cross-functionally with teams across the organization
- Maintain organized records of grant applications, reporting requirements, and funding outcomes
- Build relationships with funders and work closely with the Director of Development to steward existing and potential donors
- Assist with donor engagement efforts, including newsletters, on-site tours, and annual reporting
Requirements and skills
- Proven success as a nonprofit grant writer with a history of securing funding
- Strong research and analytical skills to identify and evaluate funding opportunities
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) and grant research tools like Candid
- Experience working with CRM systems and cloud-based databases to manage grant pipelines and donor relationships
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling abilities to craft compelling grant proposals
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external funding partners
- Knowledge of addiction recovery programs and nonprofit fundraising strategies is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; portfolio of successful grant applications required
Compensation
This position offers a competitive salary of $56,000 to $68,000, based on experience and qualifications.
