JET Mentor Program Coordinator

Journey into Education & Teaching

Job Description

JET Mentor Program Coordinator
Job Description

Background

Journey Into Education and Teaching promotes equity by mentoring aspiring educators from underrepresented groups as they obtain a Bachelor’s degree and teaching license, thereby ensuring an effective postsecondary pathway while improving economic mobility for adult learners. JET partners with urban school districts and colleges/universities to establish community-based teacher pipelines to ensure a racially, ethnically and linguistically diverse teacher workforce.

JET recruits paraeducators who have faced barriers to achieving a Bachelor’s degree, a prerequisite to teacher licensure. Paraeducators largely reflect the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of urban students, but they remain a largely untapped resource. By providing mentoring, advising, and professional development, JET supports this multi-year educational journey of adult learners to and through college, helping them navigate financial, academic, logistical, and social emotional learning in higher education. JET employs a mentoring model for teacher leadership as an integrated strategy for diversifying the educator workforce.

JET envisions an effective teacher workforce that reflects the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of K-12 public schools to help all students achieve academic success; and a world where underrepresented and diverse adult learners succeed in college, the teaching profession, and life; school districts that prioritize capacity building, mentoring, and leadership of existing personnel to develop local talent; equitable education systems in K-12 and postsecondary institutions; and thriving, economically sustainable communities.
