Organization Overview and Mission
Established in 1966, Cambridge School Volunteers unites the Cambridge community to help Cambridge Public Schools students feel seen, supported, and successful. An independent nonprofit operating within the Cambridge Public Schools, we offer free, easy-to-access tutoring, mentorship, and classroom programming to more than 1,500 students annually. Our professional staff develops, coordinates, and evaluates our programs, enabling us to enhance the student experience without extra burden on educators. Each program aligns intentionally with District goals, leveraging longstanding organizational partnerships and over 500 engaged volunteers to respond flexibly to emerging needs. These dedicated volunteers show up with enthusiasm and joy, honoring students’ identities and building genuine relationships that create a safe space for learning. By harnessing the power of our diverse, innovation city, we enrich the lives of all involved, building a stronger community and inspiring every student to reach their fullest potential.
Our Core Values
- We promote access and equity. Our programs are offered free on-site in all 16 Cambridge Public Schools, often to full-class cohorts, to promote equitable access for all students—especially those who need help most.
- We put relationships first. We meet students where they are, academically and emotionally, building authentic relationships that set the stage for learning and growth while creating meaningful volunteer experiences.
- We show up. Our volunteer-powered, staff-supervised programs support the work of Cambridge Public School educators by connecting students with dedicated, supportive adults invested in their growth.
- We foster connection. We connect educators, students, and dedicated volunteers from across our diverse innovation city, strengthening our community as we support students’ academic and personal success.

We rise to the challenge. We leverage our longstanding organizational partnerships and our engaged community of hundreds of volunteers to respond nimbly to the District’s most pressing needs.
