Federal Clean Energy Advocate

Work for Progress

Job Description

Clean Energy Advocate

Work with our national Clean, Green Renewable Energy program team, state-level organizers and key allies to build momentum, expand support and win policies to move America toward 100% renewable energy. Environment America’s Clean Energy Advocate will advance campaigns for energy conservation and efficiency, promote solutions such as solar and offshore wind, and work to build support for and implement policies to replace fossil fuel powered technology with electric technologies that can be powered by renewable energy.

The Clean Energy Advocate will be the public face of Environment America’s clean energy campaigns and interact directly with decision-makers, the media, coalition partners and funders.

Environment America is a national network of 30 state environmental groups with one mission — to change our country and our world to be a greener, healthier place. With more than 2 million members and supporters spread across all 50 states, our staff have been working for nearly four decades to promote national, state and local policies that put the earth first. For example, we’ve won policies that have resulted in more solar and wind power in 25 states, passage of the 2020 Great America Outdoors Act, America’s most sweeping conservation law in decades, and better protections for our rivers, streams, lakes and drinking water. We run campaigns that not only raise awareness but win results on the national stage, in states and cities, on the ballot and in the courtroom.

In every campaign we run, we put the Earth first. Nothing else matters if we don’t have a healthy planet. Restoring and protecting the environment is our only mission. We also know that lasting progress for the planet comes one challenging step at a time. We have a bold vision of a greener world. But we know that making a difference often requires compromise. No single law can completely solve a problem, but each victory sets the stage for more action and progress. We also know that, to make progress sustainable, we need to reach out to everybody, not just the people who already agree with us. We recruit supporters from every state we can — whether it’s considered “red,” “blue” or “purple.” We work with any elected official — Democrat or Republican — who wants to protect our environment. And we do whatever we think will turn public opinion and political momentum toward a greener, healthier world.

Key responsibilities of the Clean Energy Advocate:

Represent Environment America and advance our clean energy campaign goals and strategy at the federal, state and local levels. This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance. This may include but is not limited to:

  • Coalition building: Serve as the Environment America voice in coalitions, and drive efforts to build and expand our partners in the efficiency, conservation and electrification spaces. Collaborate with Environment America’s state organizations on state-specific coalition strategy and development.
  • Fundraising: Build our program through raising money from foundations and individual donors. This could include the cultivation of current donors as well as expanding our donor base to include new national, state and local funders. Working with our national grants team and large donor program, you’ll raise money to increase our reach and grow our Clean, Green and Renewable energy program.
  • Messaging and communications: Write reports, fact sheets, news releases, op-eds, articles and updates for our website, emails to our members, and other forms of communication to get our message in the media and heard by decision-makers and the public. Represent Environment America to members of the media. Tell our message and our story to diverse audiences across the country, working closely with state directors and our national communications team.
  • Campaign coordination and development: Develop and drive implementation of campaign strategy and tactics. Work closely with other members of our clean energy program team and senior leadership to coordinate strategies and opportunities.
  • Research: Take complex data and distill it into clear, powerful conclusions that are easy to communicate to decision-makers and the public.
  • Staff recruitment and management: Participate in the recruitment and management of both interns and staff. Work closely with our leadership staff to attend and lead training programs for staff at all levels.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a significant track record within citizen-based social change organizations or within the clean and renewable energy sector.

In addition, candidates should have:
  • A goal-driven, results-oriented mentality with excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, and enthusiasm for the work.
  • Experience working with members of the media and representing organizations to the public via the media.
  • A track record of successful fundraising, both at the large and small donor level, including from charitable foundations.
  • Track record of being able to work with diverse stakeholders to advance an agenda.
  • A commitment to citizen-based work as a means of securing lasting change and an understanding of the strategies for maximizing the power of field organizing.

Locations: Amherst, MA preferred. Would also consider Boston, Denver, or Washington DC.

Compensation and Benefits
The starting compensation range is $36,000-$57,000 and depends on relevant experience and/or education. Candidates on the low end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range. Environment America offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package may include medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, needs-based student loan assistance, 401(k) plan with employer match, commuter benefit program, paid time off, parental leave and long-term disability insurance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
