Job Description

The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) is accepting applications for a full-time Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Associate to provide strategic support to the DEI Director in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion. MLAC is an exciting place to work with a diverse staff and inclusive work environment. We are located in a beautiful office space on Tremont Street near Government Center in Boston. Due to the pandemic, MLAC is following a hybrid work schedule.

The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) is a non-profit organization established by the Commonwealth to ensure that people with low incomes with critical, non-criminal legal problems have access to legal information, advice, and representation. MLAC provides leadership and support for the continued improvement of legal aid to low-income people and is the largest funding source for civil legal aid organizations in the Commonwealth.

SUMMARY OF POSITION  
The MLAC DEI team seeks to create a diverse, representative, and collaborative environment within legal aid organizations to provide accessible, welcoming, and culturally competent services to clients of all backgrounds and their communities. The DEI Associate will provide program support for the legal aid organizations MLAC funds, as well as additional support to MLAC staff, and executive board. This position will partner with the MLAC DEI Director to create training, educational programs, and activities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the delivery of legal services. 
 
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES 
In partnership with the DEI Director: 
  • Design, facilitate and execute training and other professional development opportunities for legal aid organizations and MLAC staff, and research topics related to DEI 
  • Help plan annual statewide legal services conference 
  • Serve on MLAC hiring committees as needed 
  • Identify and consolidate research that tracks internal and external DEI initiatives  
  • Develop and monitor DEI outreach programs; partner with outside DEI organizations to bring fresh perspective for legal aid organizations 
  • Identify external conferences, consultants, and trainings as professional development opportunities for MLAC staff and grantee organizations 
  • Collaborate with the MLAC Data team and civil legal aid organizations on options for tracking development of diverse talent aspiring to leadership roles and client demographics 
  • Assist in liaising with affinity bar organizations and members of the Legal Aid Attorneys of Color group to foster partnerships 
  • Provide support to MLAC’s Statewide DEI Council members 
  • Collaborate with Communications team to create, highlight, and share DEI information and resources through the MLAC newsletter, website, and social media channels 
  • Assist with coordinating Statewide DEI Council meetings and program visits 
  • Collaborate with Director of Program Monitoring and Evaluation to manage MLAC’s Fellowship process as well as other initiatives 
 
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE 
  • Experience with designing and facilitating DEI training and discussions 
  • Experience and comfort with Outlook, Microsoft Office, Zoom, Power Point and other presentation tools 
  • Attention to detail, organized and comfortable managing multiple projects at once 
  • Experience working with small teams/groups in a diverse environment  
  • Capable of exercising discretion and good judgment, including sensitivity to confidential information 
  • Demonstrated commitment to working on issues impacting low-income communities and communities of color  

Benefits: MLAC offers competitive compensation and benefits, including: 
  • Salary range of $45,000 to $64,900 for this position, depending on experience
