Job Description
The goal of The Rowe Center is to provide opportunities for people to explore diverse, far-reaching subjects in order to learn about themselves, each other, our cultures and the earth, and go forth with new knowledge, insight, and courage. The Director of Programming and Retreats serves as a crucial facilitator of that mission. This position is responsible for bringing to Rowe the next generation of thought leaders, educators and visionaries to provide in-person and online educational opportunities for our guests. They are responsible for the curation and scheduling of a year round workshop season. They are responsible for ensuring that presenters feel that they are in partnership with Rowe and not simply a service provider and that their programs support and further the goals and values of The Rowe Center. The Director of Programming and Retreats will work under the direction of the Executive Director to develop and implement a roadmap that builds on the successes of the past and meets the changing needs of the future. Special attention will be paid to expanding our online learning opportunities and developing strategies to cultivate and support workshop leaders representing backgrounds and viewpoints that are traditionally underrepresented in the conference center community. In addition, the Director of Programming and Retreats manages the development and implementation of private retreats and facility rentals, with the support of other Rowe staff.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
● Responsible for the quality of online, in-person and self-paced adult conference programming.
● Produce a balanced program of in-person programming across all program categories (Creative Arts, Nature & Health, Social Change, Spirituality, Personal Growth and Relationships & Communication)
● Produce a balanced program of online programming across all program categories. Online programs vary in duration, frequency and format.
● Work directly with workshop leaders to create a program description, negotiate fees, develop promotional materials, market and support programs.
● Develop new online, in-person and self-paced programs, both short and long term.
● Coordinate and distribute financial aid.
● Find and cultivate emerging talent with an emphasis on developing long term, mutually beneficial
relationships.
● Responsible for working with team members and leaders to successfully market the department’s programs in a timely way with the goal of filling programs to their capacity.
● Work directly with leaders to reach desired markets. Work with the programming staff to develop and implement strategies to maximize attendance.
● Work with program leaders to create content for The Rowe Center's various outreach tools such as The Center Post/e-newsletters, program brochures, ads, conference flyers, etc. including coordinating writing, editing, proofreading, and layout. Write a copy as necessary.
● Ensure the programming department stays within budget.
● Manage pricing and option packages for private retreats and facility rentals.
● Coordinate private retreat and facility rentals with customers and Rowe staff.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
● Oversee workshop logistics such as welcoming leaders, communicating workshop needs to Rowe staff and ensuring that all requirements of a successful program are met.
● Provide general leader and guest support as needed during the programs.
● Serve as project managers for select special events as needed.
● Oversee private retreat and facility rentals such as welcoming leaders, communicating customer needs to Rowe staff and ensuring that all requirements of successful rentals are met.
● Maintain a professional, collaborative, and friendly atmosphere.
● Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
● Attend all regularly scheduled meetings.
● Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
● Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects.
● Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide cross-section of personalities and backgrounds.
● An ability to spot and respond to emerging trends.
● An insatiable curiosity and passion for sharing knowledge.
● Experience writing compelling descriptive copy that makes people want to learn more.
● Warm and outgoing personality; strong people skills.
● Proficiency in MS Office and G-Suite applications preferred.
● Familiarity with Trello preferred.
● Excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritize work.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Strong networking skills.
● Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask.
● Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Work Experience and Education:
● Experience finding and developing business relationships with independent contractors (such as booking musicians, recruiting authors for publication, booking speakers or similar).
● Experience in marketing, publishing, community relations or conference, retreat or educational programing.
● Experience finding and cultivating emerging or underrepresented talent.
● Experience creating online or hybrid online/in-person programming or experiences is a plus.
● Must be willing to submit to a criminal background check.
