General Statement of Duties 
The Director of Communications and Marketing will work to increase the profile of YW Boston in our community, encompassing all areas of marketing including communications, public relations, print materials, social media, and the website. The Director will work with staff across the organization to set strategic direction for messaging and manage communications across all media. Strategy and execution will directly support organizational goals, as well as business development, advancement, and programmatic outcomes. 
The Director of Marketing and Communications will report to the Chief Engagement Officer. 
 
Position Outcomes 
The successful Director of Marketing and Communications will achieve the following outcomes: 
  • Develop and execute high-level communications and marketing strategy that is in alignment with YW Boston’s organizational goals 
  • Expand YW Boston’s community and increase awareness of programs and activities 
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive, multi-media editorial calendar that supports brand awareness, thought leadership, engagement, program recruitment, business development, and fundraising 
  • Oversee and strengthen collaboration between the Marketing & Communications team and other departments within the organization to support YW Boston’s mission and impact 
 
Key Responsibilities 
  • Develop comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that centers YW Boston’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and positions the organization as an expert in the DEI industry 
  • Develop, manage, execute, and monitor a multi-media editorial calendar that adheres to the organization’s brand guidelines and supports our focus areas of expertise. This includes, but is not limited to, written long-form content, such as blog posts, press releases, reports, and OpEds; social media content strategy; and email marketing 
  • Manage public relations and support community outreach, working with external advisors and other staff members as appropriate 
  • Understand organization’s audience and assess communication effectiveness through surveys, data analytics, and market segmentation 
  • Oversee brand management and ensure staff understanding of brand guidelines 
  • Maintain the YW Boston website which includes: training and onboarding relevant marketing and program staff on how to use it; keeping program, event, staff, board, content, and fund development pages up to date; monitoring the health and functionality of the website; optimizing accessibility of the website; overseeing relationships with IT and accessibility vendors; updating and organizing web files as needed, and supervising the delegation of some of these tasks 
  • Overseeing design of multi-media content and collateral including print, video, and digital. This includes, but is not limited to: social media videos and graphics (such as Stories, Reels, albums, posts); long-form videos for YouTube or program curriculum; white papers and reports; invitations and promotional event materials; event program books; organizational brochures; sponsorship collateral; mail appeals; etc. 
  • Work with YW Boston’s Chief Engagement Officer and other members of the Engagement team to support cultivation efforts, alumni engagement, stakeholder engagement, and special events 
  • Develop fundraising collateral and support fundraising campaigns with guidance and input from the Advancement team 
  • Support YW Boston programs and Advocacy Committee by executing strategies that help programs meet their engagement and enrollment goals 
  • Oversee executive communications for YW Boston’s President & CEO including speechwriting and remarks 
  • Train and support staff across the organization, as needed, on Communications and Marketing skills such as: Email (Pardot), WordPress, use of design templates, messaging best practices, Canva, content creation and design, creating editorial calendars, etc. 
 
Experience/Qualifications 
  • 7+ years of experience in marketing and communications 
  • Demonstrated commitment to YW Boston’s mission to promote racial, gender and social equity 
  • Experience with implementation of a marketing strategy, including integrated communications across different channels; digital and print, paid, earned, and owned media 
  • Excellent writing skills and superb verbal communication skills 
  • Experience with graphic design and a keen eye for design and brand consistency 
  • Excellent customer service and vendor management skills 
  • Must be able to manage a variety of projects with different timelines, exhibit flexibility in re-prioritizing, manage internal and external relationships in collaborative projects, take direction well in addition to taking initiative to work independently 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, and Power Point 
  • Experience with a range of social media platforms, marketing analytics tools, and email marketing management. In particular, CRM and CMS such as Pardot/Salesforce and WordPress 
  • Able to travel within the Greater Boston area occasionally for special events 
  • Openness to learning and willingness to give and receive feedback 
  • Non-profit experience and familiarity with social justice work is a plus 
  • Experience with web design, web development, HTML, and/or WordPress management is a plus 
 
Additional Organization Responsibilities 
  • Adhere to organization policies and procedures for maintaining organizational culture and transparency, including use of regularly scheduled progress meetings with supervisor, team meetings, scheduling, e-mail and other communications platforms 
  • Positively represent the organization in all interactions with the public 
  • Support YW Boston advancement through participation in education, outreach, cultivation and stewardship efforts 
  • Participate in organization events and perform additional tasks assigned by supervisor and/or President & CEO 
 
Salary and Benefits: 
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Annual salary range is $76,000-$89,000. Compensation is based on the overall number of years of experience as well as relevant experience to the position. Salary scales are set according to an explicit compensation policy, and relevant market data is analyzed when setting ranges for each role.
