About The Security Foundation

Founded in 2011, The Security Foundation (TSF) is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is Enabling impactful collaboration throughout the security industry.

TSF supports programs and initiatives that strengthen collaboration across the security community, including public-private partnerships, nonprofit organizations, workforce development initiatives, and other mission-aligned programs.

As TSF continues to grow, we are strengthening our internal financial infrastructure and seeking an experienced Director of Finance to lead the organization's day-to-day financial management and accounting functions.

The Opportunity

The Director of Finance will serve as TSF's senior staff leader for finance and accounting and will assume responsibility for financial functions previously managed by the Executive Director.

This is an ideal role for an experienced nonprofit finance professional who is both strategic and hands-on. The Director will oversee TSF's accounting systems, financial reporting, budgeting, audit preparation, internal controls, and financial operations while working closely with the Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and program staff.

The successful candidate will bring strong nonprofit accounting experience and advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online and will be comfortable independently managing the accounting cycle from transaction review and reconciliation through month-end close and preparation of financial statements.

Key Responsibilities

Finance & Accounting

  • Manage TSF's general ledger and maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
  • Lead monthly and year-end financial close processes.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and other management reports.
  • Manage bank, investment, and credit-card reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, reimbursements, deposits, and financial transactions.
  • Maintain appropriate accounting for restricted and unrestricted contributions.
  • Ensure expenses are properly allocated among programs, administration, and fundraising.
  • Monitor cash flow and identify significant financial trends, risks, and variances.
 

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Lead development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Monitor organizational and program spending against approved budgets.
  • Prepare forecasts and financial analyses to support management and Board decision-making.
  • Work with program and development staff to ensure financial plans align with organizational priorities.
 

Grants & Program Accounting

  • Maintain financial accounting for TSF grants and funded programs.
  • Track program expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Ensure grant payments are appropriately authorized, documented, coded, and reconciled.
  • Account for donor-restricted contributions related to specific programs.
  • Work closely with the Director of Programs, who oversees the programmatic grant lifecycle.
 

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison for TSF's independent auditors and accountants.
  • Lead annual audit preparation and provide required schedules and documentation.
  • Coordinate financial information required for Form 990 and other filings.
  • Maintain and strengthen financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Ensure appropriate segregation of duties and documentation of financial transactions.
 

Board & Finance Committee Support

  • Prepare financial materials for Finance Committee and Board meetings.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Treasurer to communicate financial results.
  • Clearly explain financial information, significant variances, forecasts, and risks to both financial and non-financial audiences.
 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit accounting.
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting, general ledger management, reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Understanding of restricted and unrestricted nonprofit funds.
  • Experience preparing for an independent audit.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to financial accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of financial processes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to non-financial colleagues and Board members.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit Board or Finance Committee.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit grant accounting, Form 990 preparation, and fundraising-event accounting.
