Job Description
The Center for Teen Empowerment (TE) employs, trains and empowers youth to, in collaboration with adults, create peace, equity and justice. Working in Rochester, Boston and Somerville, MA, TE implements a unique asset-based youth organizing program that employs youth to identify the most pressing issues in their community and develop a strategy to address those issues. Using TE’s interactive model, the project builds the leadership skills of youth and trains them to do the planning and problem solving necessary to implement their strategic plans.
We seek a full time Director of Development. Currently, TE has a flexible in-person/remote work schedule with the position located at the headquarters in Boston, MA. This position will manage the entire organization’s fundraising strategy, with direct reports from our current and expanded sites.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will be responsible for managing all fundraising activities to meet revenue goals in support of Teen Empowerment’s mission. The director will be a dynamic, collaborative leader with deep experience in the nonprofit sector and previous experience as a key member of a development department. The development director will also bring connection to national and local foundations and experience with accessing and managing federal funding such as The Department of Labor, The Department of Education, The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, and The Department of Justice.
The Director of Development will be responsible for managing grants; donor relations, including solicitation and stewardship; event planning; building and managing a development team; and ensuring excellence in all department activities Internally, s/he will galvanize the entire Teen Empowerment staff around fundraising efforts and be responsible for ensuring performance against annual objectives. Externally, the director will be an ambassador of our work in many, diverse settings.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Build and Manage Development Team
- Create a staffing plan for future growth of a development team to support organizational goals.
- Lead a collaborative process with program site directors to construct annual goals, budget, work plan and calendar for fundraising.
- Supervise and manage development staff initiatives and staff at current TE sites.
- Manage the implementation of Raiser's Edge and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing
- Hire and manage new development team members for new sites as the organization expands. Coach and develop new members of the department.
Grants and Corporate and Foundation Relations:
- Identify and research potential funders for program and operating support.
- Lead the process to secure financial support from individuals, foundations, & corporations
- Meet with funders, often in collaboration with TE’s Executive Director and TE youth.
- Steward relationships.
- Lead writing or outsourcing the writing of grant proposals, reports, and correspondence to corporate, foundation, and government donors.
- Track grant proposal and report deadlines, status, and results. Process and track grants, thank donors, and prepare reports.
Individual Donors and Events
- Create and manage a strategic donor solicitation plan, including stewarding relationships with current donors and cultivating new ones. Research prospective donors via BlackBaud Wealth Screening.
- Work with TE Leadership to send out annual fundraising appeals including direct mail and email solicitations.
- Coordinate annual fundraising events including coordinating a host committee, seeking sponsorships, event logistics, invitations and communications, and solicitation of in-kind donations.
- Develop processes to ensure effective reporting, tracking, acknowledgement, and correspondence with donors.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, Master’s degree a plus.
- Previous fundraising experience with a nonprofit social service or youth development agency, ideally with multiple programs and raising millions of dollars annually from private sources.
- Experience with all elements of a multi-pronged fundraising approach, including special events, major gifts, grants, and planned giving. Experience using fundraising software.
- Knowledge and experience of Raiser’s Edge NXT, BlackBaud
- Proven ability to establish, steward, and grow relationships with existing and potential donors.
- Track record of successful corporate, foundation, and government grant proposals. Management of government grants is a plus.
- 5+ years of management and supervisory experience.
- Unwavering commitment to excellence in organizational and project management and the ability to achieve strategic objectives while managing multiple, complicated projects.
- Exceptional communication skills. A persuasive, credible, and polished communicator.
- Creative, independent, and strategic thinker.
- Exceptional people management skills. Track record of effectively leading an outcome- Insure compliance with grant stipulations.
- Ability to collaborate productively with diverse people at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work effectively with, and quickly gain the respect and support of, diverse constituencies, including board and staff, donors, corporate partners, and foundation and civic leaders.
- Flexibility and adaptability, with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work and meet deadlines. Excellent attention to detail.
- Demonstrated passion for Teen Empowerment’s mission.
Salary: $85,000 - 95,000 commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, salaried position with excellent benefits. Some evenings and weekends required. (The salary for this role will increase as we begin to expand to other cities and states)
