Job Description
Position: Director of Development and External Relations
Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: This is a full time, exempt position and requires evening, morning and occasional weekend hours.
Position Overview
The Director of Development and External Relations manages donor development and all facets of community communications and relationships of Beverly Bootstraps including with volunteers. This is a senior management level position and is an integral part of the Leadership team that collaborates with the Board of Directors on strategic direction. The Leadership team creates operational implementation plans with policies and procedures that incorporate best practices and affords stewardship of Beverly Bootstraps.
The Director of Development and External Relations will maintain relationships with current donors and volunteers and will seek new supporters of the organization’s mission and work.
The Director of Development and External Relations will work closely with the Communications Supervisor to create communication strategies that share the good work of the organization and encourage continued support of the mission of Beverly Bootstraps.
The Director of Development and External Relations will oversee all budgets of the department and will work in conjunction with the Finance department to track revenue and spending and to create new budgets during the agency budget process.
The Director of Development and External Relations will work with the Program Director to collaborate on funding opportunities that support the budgeted expenses of the programs.
The Director of Development and External Relations will work with all agency departments to ensure an effective volunteer program.
As part of the leadership team, the Director of Development and External Relations might be asked to take on special projects that benefit the agency that are out of the scope of the regular duties detailed in this job description.
Essential Functions
Organizational Strategy
. As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Development and External Relations will play an integral role in the strategic direction and operations of the organization.
. Work with the Leadership Team to steward the organization in fiscal responsibility, operational efficiency and commitment to mission.
. Assist Executive Director in ongoing relations with the Board of Directors.
Development
. Meet the annual fundraising goals for cash and in kind giving.
. Maintain relationships with current donors and funders.
. Cultivate new relationships with those interested in supporting the mission of the organization.
. Strategize and direct the annual appeal.
. Coordinate donor acknowledgement efforts.
. Support grant writer in efforts to apply and report to funders.
. Plan and support implementation of fundraising events.
. Oversee the maintenance of the donor database; support efforts to capture data; prepare and analyze reports.
Communications
Work closely with the Communications Supervisor to maintain the organization’s brand and to:
. Manage the organization's website;
. Produce and distribute bi-annual newsletter;
. Engage the community through social media;
. Market programs to clients and stakeholders;
. Represent the organization publicly at meetings and presentations.
Volunteers
. Oversee volunteer recruitment and retention activities and ensure a positive experience for all involved in the volunteer process.
Manage Personnel
. Recruit, hire, and provide training and supervision reporting staff: Communications Supervisor, Volunteer Coordinator, Development Coordinator, Development Assistant.
. Provide reviews as required by H.R.
. If applicable, discipline and terminate employees.
. Work with the H.R. department and Leadership to appreciate and recognize staff.
Programs
. Collaborate with the Program Director and Leadership on strategic growth of programs.
. Confer with the Program Director and Leadership regarding development of new programming.
. Work with the Program Director and Leadership team to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of programs.
. Work with the Program Director and program staff to maintain a standard for collection of program data in order to communicate effectiveness of programs.
Finance
. Work collaboratively with the Finance department and the Program Director to prepare program budgets and Tool Kits for each Fiscal Year.
. Confer with own department staff regarding budgets and purchases.
. Approve or prepare invoices or reports on spending as needed.
. Assist the Finance department with projections for long-term needs of organization.
Thrift Shop
. Collaborate with the Thrift Shop Manager and Leadership to support the activities of the Thrift Shop.
. With the Communications Supervisor, manage the external marketing of Thrift operations.
Administration & Community Engagement
. Support office culture, policies and procedures.
. Act as liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
. Report updates monthly to the management team, Executive Director and Board of Directors.
. Support operational activities and other staff as needed.
. Assume duties as directed during the Executive Director’s absence.
. Cultivate and maintain relationships with key community leaders and represent the agency at community events and local boards.
General
. Adhere to the Beverly Bootstraps Security Plan and Procedures.
. Comply with all policies and procedures as outlined in the Beverly Bootstraps Employee Handbook.
. Proactively seek to understand and support the mission of Beverly Bootstraps and the “whole” department/agency function and needs.
Minimum Job Requirements:
. Successful CORI and background check
. Education: Graduation from a four year college program or more
. Experience: 10 + years related experience
~ Non-profit fundraising background - or corporate sales
~ Proven leadership and effectiveness in past situations
~ Microsoft proficiency required
~ Major Gifts Campaign or Capital Campaign experience a plus
~ Human Services experience a plus
~ Donor Database experience a plus
. Valid MA driver’s license with good to excellent driving record
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
. Organized, driven and focused
. Excellent communications skills – verbal and written - and the ability to interact and communicate with people on all levels
. Respect and caring for the Beverly Bootstraps’ mission and the variety of people involved in the organization
. Experience with creation and presentation of proposals and marketing materials
. Ability to transition easily amongst tasks and perform in a fast-paced environment
. Flexibility and sense of humor is a must
Primary Physical Requirements:
Candidate will need to interface with a variety of people. Candidate must excel at communication in a fast-paced environment, requiring the ability to hear and speak. Candidate must be able to read and understand varied types of data and assimilate information quickly. Candidate must be able to plan and execute strategic plan. Candidate must be able to resolve questions and issues. Long periods of computer use and telephone use may be necessary. Presentation to groups and donors is required.
