Position Summary
The New Art Center is a non-profit, community art education space which offers exceptional opportunities to make, exhibit, view, think about and talk about art. New Art seeks a dynamic, experienced Deputy Director of Education to manage the day-to-day operations of the Program Department and oversee, implement and evaluate all programs, including studio art classes for all ages, exhibitions and associated public programs. This position will have primary operational responsibility for all New Art Center educational programming for the public. The position works with all staff and is also responsible for many aspects of the organization's infrastructure: including operations, human resources and administration. The Director of Education is part of the senior management team, and works closely with the Executive Director on organizational development, strategic planning, outreach and finances.
Position Details:
Management Oversight:
- Ensure smooth day-to-day operations of a busy art school, with over 3,0000 enrollments in two facilities each year
- Provide all staff (direct reports and others) with a strong, supportive, approachable presence, empowering staff building, clear goals and work plans, access to resources, accountability, and troubleshooting.
- Manage, evaluate and hire (as needed) a faculty of 30-40 artist/teachers, studio managers, exhibition managers and curators, Education Coordinator, Registrar, and Facilities Manager, as well as hire and manage temporary summer/vacation staff.
- Manage budget for education and exhibition programs revenues and expenses.
- Oversee schedule for building use, including income generating rentals and community requests
- Supervise the Registrar regarding registrations, class participation and cancellations.
- Supervise the Ceramics Program Manager and the Studio & Exhibitions Coordinator Studio Coordinator which includes overseeing programs, policies, studio and event operations, equipment purchase and maintenance and approval of supply purchases.
- Work with the Office Manager regarding contracts, payroll, and timesheets.
- Represent the organization externally as necessary.
Program Oversight:
- Design, implement, manage and coordinate all of New Art’s education programs. This includes 100+ classes, workshops, and vacation programs (teens, children, adults) each term, and a 10-week summer camp program for children and teens.
- Evaluate and supervise arts instruction for art students ranging from young children to seasoned adults
- Develop 4 catalogs of classes offered which includes preparing the content.
- Work with Marketing Manager to coordinate all program-related printed and electronic marketing materials.
- Oversee community events and special programs including Community Cultural Days, the Youth Leadership Program, the Art As Therapy Program, and Expressive Arts Groups
- Oversee internal and external exhibition program of 8+ exhibitions per year which provides students, staff, faculty and volunteers the opportunity to exhibit.
Strategic Oversight:
- Promote an organizational culture of inclusion, diversity, and equity, reflection, curiosity, analysis innovation, and open mutual feedback
- Ensure that the classes offered are mission-driven and revise or develop new classes as needed.
- Regularly evaluate ROI of classes and programs and revise or develop new classes as needed.
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
- Assist and participate in the development of vision, goals and objectives to outline and implement the next phase of New Art Center’s strategic plan.

Experience and Requirements
- Dynamic, creative arts professional dedicated to lowering barriers to participation in the experience of art at all levels.
- Highly organized and systems-minded, with the capacity to develop and implement efficient processes and protocols.
- 5+ years experience with educational program development and management required; working with professional artists.
- 3+ years experience managing direct reports
- Experience developing children’s art curriculum and identifying artist/teachers for adult teaching programs.
- Experience developing and managing budgets, developing and implementing strategy, evaluating and supporting professional staff, providing professional growth and direction to emerging arts professionals.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while meeting firm deadlines, and is comfortable and flexible taking on multiple responsibilities as needed, in both hands-on and supervisory capacities.
- Experience with databases and class scheduling software.
- Preferred candidates will have studio teaching experience, non-profit administrative experience, and/or exhibitions experience.
- Exceptional ability to multi-task and remain focused in a busy, high energy gallery and studio environment.
- Excellent written, graphic communication and database (Excel) skills required.
- BFA in studio art or equivalent experience; extensive knowledge of art processes and materials; masters degree preferred.
