Job Description

ABOUT CAPLAW: The mission of Community Action Program Legal Services (CAPLAW) is to eliminate poverty by strengthening the legal and management capacity of community organizations. CAPLAW is the national legal expert for the Community Action network. Through consultations, training, and resources we equip approximately 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) across the country with the knowledge and tools to operate as accountable and effective change agents. We also provide guidance to federal, state, and national Community Action partners on legal and financial issues affecting CAAS. 
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: We’re looking for a creative communications, events, and design professional who understands the importance of traditional and digital communications in training and equipping leaders of nonprofit and public organizations across the country on their legal, financial, and governance responsibilities. The Communications and Events Coordinator is responsible for helping develop and implement CAPLAW’s education and outreach strategies. The candidate will have a strong entrepreneurial spirit and can quickly pivot from project to project, maintain strong communication and design skills, and take ownership of projects and ideas. 
 
This is a full-time position. This position works closely with and supports the full CAPLAW team, but to a large extent uses their own judgment, initiative, and discretion in determining the individual tasks to be accomplished and the manner in which those tasks are completed. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Design and manage CAPLAW’s electronic communications and publications: 
  • Serve as a brand gatekeeper for CAPLAW and design resources and marketing materials that align with CAPLAW’s aesthetics; 
  • Design and distribute CAPLAW’s electronic communications using e-mail marketing platform (Campaign Monitor); and 
  • Maintain and regularly update CAPLAW’s e-mail lists. 

Design, maintain, and update CAPLAW’s website and online resource library: 
  • Create and revise website content in WordPress using Divi; 
  • Design website graphics and web-based resources and publications; 
  • Serve as the website gatekeeper by regularly monitoring and ensuring all content is up-to-date and engaging;  
  • Monitor and analyze website analytics using tools such as Matomo, to support programmatic reporting and storytelling; and 
  • Dive into website code to implement and fix designs using front-end design languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. 

Plan and coordinate CAPLAW’s annual national training conference, which draws 550+ attendees from across the national Community Action network: 
  • Develop a conference brand and design all marketing, promotional, and conference event materials for print, electronic dissemination, and a conference app (Whova); 
  • Implement an online conference registration platform (Eventzilla) and oversee the registration process, in coordination with CAPLAW’s Operations and Finance Coordinator and outside conference planners; 
  • Develop and implement strategies for obtaining and retaining conference sponsors and exhibitors;  
  • Implement a conference app (Whova) to make event and training materials available to attendees and speakers; 
  • Facilitate conference AV needs, in coordination with conference speakers, hotel staff, and outside conference planners; 
  • Implement and facilitate a process to collect attendee and speaker feedback; and 
  • Serve as the on-site conference point person coordinating communications between CAPLAW staff, outside conference planners, speakers, and volunteers. 

Coordinate webinars and other training events: 
  • Facilitate CAPLAW webinars (Zoom) by setting up registration, working with presenters on event logistics, publicizing events via email and website communications, distributing presentation materials and post-event surveys, and ensuring all webinar events run smoothly;  
  • Maintain all webinar content and materials in CAPLAW’s online resource library; and 
  • Serve as the primary host and point of contact with respect to the webinar platform. 

Maintain Salesforce database of members, consultations, and events: 
  • Create, update, and maintain all database records; 
  • Facilitate membership communications, in coordination with CAPLAW’s Operations and Finance Coordinator; 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with respect to the Salesforce platform. 

Research and make recommendations about various technology that will increase CAPLAW’s educational capabilities as well as our visibility and accessibility to the national Community Action network. 

Perform other related duties as required. 
 
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 
  • Creative flair and an eye for design;  
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently; 
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, and written and oral communications skills; 
  • Comfortable working with a small team; 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook); 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud programs (InDesign, Illustrator), and a keen interest in learning other design and animation software (e.g. Vyond, Adobe Presenter); 
  • Experience with WordPress and an interest in learning how to use Divi; 
  • Experience with front-end digital design including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; 
  • Knowledge of site analytics tools such as Matomo;  
  • Experience with webinar, events, communications and survey software/programs (preferably Zoom, Adobe Premiere Pro/Rush, Campaign Monitor, Eventzilla, Whova, GetFeedback);  
  • Familiarity with database and e-marketing software (Salesforce experience a plus);  
  • Bonus experience: working knowledge of Linux command line, Linux Shell Scripts, PHP, Apache (webserver) administration, Cloud Infrastructure Hosting (i.e., Linode/AWS), DNS administration, Git/Github; and 
  • Commitment to working in the nonprofit sector and with diverse populations. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, PR, Design or a related field required. Some experience in communications, marketing, PR, design or a related field preferred.

The ability to work in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time is an essential aspect of this position. There may be periodic need to lift and/or move materials and equipment. This position will be primarily remote. Occasional in-person work at CAPLAW’s office located in downtown Boston near South Station, and some travel, will be required.
