 While young people from low-income communities – who are disproportionately young people of color – face systemic inequities in school, in the workforce, and in life, they possess unique strengths, resilience and tremendous potential. When provided with support and resources, these young people fulfill their potential and achieve success in school, work and life.  

Through a combination of mentoring and transformative experiences, Summer Search supports young people to successfully transition from adolescence into adulthood. We aim to unleash the potential of our young people while also building a toolkit for navigating and challenging systemic barriers to higher education and career opportunities. 
 
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Career & Internship Coordinator plays a key role in connecting Summer Search Boston Post-Secondary Participants (years 1-6 after high school) with and supporting them throughout meaningful internship and career exploration opportunities.  This dynamic role combines project coordination, communication with Summer Searchers, group facilitation, and 1:1 advising. Reporting to the Career Navigator and Internship Manager, this hire will join a team of dedicated and knowledgeable youth development professionals with a passion for equity, professional growth, and wellbeing.
 
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Career Program Implementation  
  • Support internship application processes for participant selection, preparation and support that can be replicated across various partnerships  
  • Provide career counseling and coaching to post-secondary participants and respond to participant career questions and requests on an as needed basis, including providing resources and utilizing volunteers, where applicable
  • Review resumes and cover letters, and conduct mock interviews to support participant application success and skill development
  • Contribute to and facilitate workshops for post-secondary participants related to career exploration and readiness
  • Increase and organize resource bank of career-readiness programs and opportunities and serve as resource for participants and staff
    • Strengthen career pathway guides to support our most common majors ensuring that post-secondary students receive the support they need to successfully secure a job
    • Collect resources on career pathways, such as certificate and apprenticeship programs
  • Implement virtual & in-person events for our post-secondary participants related to career and internship programming, and assist as needed with additional team event planning
  • In collaboration with program and development staff, assist in delivering the Career Coach Program

Participant Outreach & Communication  
  • Conduct targeted outreach to post-secondary participants about internship opportunities, job openings, career events, and other forms of support
  • Lead cold outreach efforts to out-of-touch participants in years 2-6 of their post-secondary journey
  • Maintain communication with engaged participants by conducting periodic check-ins
  • Coordinate process that provides consistent communication with post-secondary participants about internship and career exploration opportunities  
  • Utilize internal platform CONNECT to communicate and engage with participants, including those who reach out from other regional sites

Partnership Engagement  
  • In partnership with the Career Navigator and Internship Manager, contribute updates, feedback and data for communication with internship partners to build a high-quality internship experience for participants and partners 
  • In partnership with the Career Navigator and Internship Manager, work with the development team to provide clear volunteer opportunities for board members, corporate partners, donors, and community members through career events, career coaching program, and informational interviews  
  • Identify career opportunities to create, sustain and further enhance Summer Search’s visibility within the Boston/Greater Boston community

Data Management & Quality Control:
  • Create and compile pre and post evaluations on internships, workshops, and events for both participants and internship partners    
  • Remain current on internship issues and employment strategies for efficient placement
  • Input necessary data into Salesforce and participate in data reporting and evaluation to inform career programming and needs
  • Maintain timely data entry and tracking to share with manager, Development team, and external partners, as needed

  • EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE: 1-2 years of experience in career services, ideally with college-aged youth from low-income communities, and with demonstrated knowledge in building career skills (ex. resume and cover letter writing), industry exploration, and career counseling required. 
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Works in an organized manner to achieve goals and objectives. Balances competing priorities when managing projects.
  • TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION: Inspires and fosters commitment, connection, enthusiasm and trust with staff, partners, and participants.
  • CRITICAL CONCIOUSNESS: Recognizes sociopolitical barriers and understands the systems of oppression that operate in day-to-day lives of stakeholders e.g. participants, staff members, donors, business/ corporate partners, and volunteers. Applies critical thinking and takes action against the oppressive aspects of reality, especially as it relates to workforce entry and career development.
  • ADAPTABILITY: Remains curious and flexible and demonstrates a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work. Stays productive and solutions oriented in the face of change and unfamiliar scenarios.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY: Is responsive to needs of stakeholders e.g. program participants, staff, volunteers, community partners. Holds self responsible for projects and actions to drive high quality outcomes for participants.
  • TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Proficient in the administrative process of acquiring, validating and managing accurate information with a shared system.

WORK HOURS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Work hours are Mon-Fri 10am-6pm with occasional weekend and evening special events. This position will be a hybrid remote/in-person role based out of our Boston office with 3 days in the office, 2 days working remotely, with some in-person training and meetings that may fall out of that expectation.
Summer Search requires all its staff be vaccinated against COVID-19.  Employees who are unable to be vaccinated due to a medical reason or sincerely held religious objection may be able to qualify for an exemption, consistent with state and federal law.
 
BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
This is a non-exempt position with a pay range of $30.03-$32.41 per hour (equivalent to $58,567-$63,198 annually). Salaries are benchmarked using current market data and salary bands are created to demonstrate the growth potential within the band. Typically, offers are made at the starting place of the salary band. The Hiring Manager partners with the Talent Team to ensure offers are appropriate, competitive and maintain internal equity.
