Job Description

CMCB is excited to welcome a new Associate Director of the Community Music School to the Programs Team, reporting to the Senior Director of the Community Music School. This role is an excellent mid-career opportunity for candidates with experience in the arts and education sectors who can implement educational frameworks, build strong relationships with faculty, and manage many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Community Music School. The Associate Director of CMS is integral in implementing CMCB's Courses of Study Framework with faculty and identifying innovative programming that will support CMCB's Strategic Plan. This position will directly supervise the CMS Coordinators and the Faculty Instructional Leads, and indirectly oversee all faculty. In doing so, the Associate Director will ensure faculty voice is incorporated into programmatic and operational decisions. While previous experience or interest in nonprofit administration is a plus, any candidate with experience teaching, implementing innovative programming and managing operational aspects of a program will thrive. Status: Full-Time Salaried (40 hours/week), Exempt

Start Date: August - September 2023

Schedule: Hybrid, Tuesday - Saturday, occasional evening hours with advance notice

Reports to: Senior Director of the Community Music School (SDCMS)

Oversees: Faculty Department Chairs (Instructional Leads), Faculty, Community Music School Coordinators (2)

Works Closely With: Registrars, Community Engagement & Clinical Manager, Senior Director of the Community Engagement Programs (SDCEP), Executive Director (ED) 

Responsibilities

Operations
  • Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of all internal Community Music School (CMS) events
  • Oversee set up, operation, breakdown, and inventory of events-related A/V equipment 
  • Oversee the maintenance, inventory, and repair of CMCB's instruments 
  • Support current programming and the implementation of new onsite programs
  • Foster and leverage CMCB's strong reputation a to sustain current programming and to develop future opportunities for expansion and growth
  • Oversee electronic databases and resources, including programmatic software.
  • Identify and promote innovative programming in accordance with CMCB's strategic plan 
  • Implement and support CMCB's newly developed Courses of Study Framework
  • Work with Human Resources and SDCMS to ensure that hiring and student recruitment practices are equitable 
  • Oversee coordination with Advancement regarding instrument donations as needed
  • Assist Registrars in communicating to families as needed

Faculty Support
  • Monitor faculty attendance, absences, substitute work, and sick time, ensuring accurate documentation
  • Support the Finance & Operations Associate with payroll processes
  • Respond to CMS faculty in an effective and timely manner
  • Manage faculty communications in tandem with the SDCMS
  • Oversee the faculty professional development resource library

Stakeholder Cultivation and Community Engagement 
  • Work with SDCMS to administer day-to-day operations to ensure that faculty, staff, students, and parents have a memorable experience that leaves a legacy on their future growth and personal development 
  • Respond to and resolve concerns of parents, students, faculty, external partners, and the public in an effective and timely manner
  • Oversee communication to CMS faculty throughout the year
  • Collaborate with the Youth Development Manager in all aspects of the youth employee workforce, particularly scheduling 
  • Work with CMS Coordinators and Department Chairs to plan and execute faculty meetings for SDCMS, including annual reviews and Department Chair meetings

Team Management 
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality and customer service 
  • Supervise and lead CMS Department Chairs
  • Empower and build camaraderie among CMS faculty while monitoring performance and development goals to recognize and leverage individual strengths that contribute to organizational success 
  • Create a nurturing, supportive work environment for youth employees based on mentorship and skill-building

Qualifications

Essential
  • Extensive professional experience in the fields of school administration, education, community arts education, and/or youth program design
  • Bachelor's degree in music performance or music/arts education with direct teaching experience
  • Minimum of two years management experience 
  • Knowledge and demonstrated implementation of cultural inclusivity curricula and best practices within the community music field 
  • Expertise in planning, organizational development, and team building in a collegial environment of mutual respect 
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and prioritizes tasks to maximize workflow 
  • Skilled in culturally competent communication; strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Prioritizes providing all stakeholders an equitable arts experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and Google Suite
  • Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S as CMCB is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time

Preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable
  • Experience working with and leading youth employees ages 18-25 or with other workforce development programs

Physical Demands
The duties of this position are performed indoors in a business/office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate during active programming hours and minimal otherwise. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time. They will need to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. The person in this position frequently communicates verbally with internal and external constituents and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Compensation and Benefits

$63,000 - $68,000, commensurate with experience
